eSIM for Maldives: what to know

The Maldives are resorts on separate islands, and signal depends on where you are: Ooredoo and Dhiraagu cover Malé, the airport, the inhabited islands and most resorts, but on far atolls and at sea the signal is weak. Hotel Wi-Fi is often paid or limited to common areas, so your own data is especially valuable here.

Local SIMs are sold at Velana airport, but against a passport and with a queue after a long flight. An eSIM switches on right after landing — before the seaplane or speedboat transfer.

Plans connect to Dhiraagu on 4G. The network is picked automatically, and Wi-Fi hotspot is allowed.

There are 9 plans: 1 GB to 20 GB of data, valid 7 days to 30 days, from €9.78. Per-day plans are available too — handy for short trips. The best price per gigabyte is the 20 GB / 30 days plan at €173.60.

Traffic exits to the internet via PL — keep this in mind for banking apps and geo-restricted services.

Install the profile before you travel, at home over Wi-Fi: validity starts the first time the eSIM joins a network at the destination, not at purchase.

Payment

Pay by international or Russian card, or in crypto. The eSIM QR code arrives by email within a couple of minutes — no account needed.

Tips for Maldives

  • Ask the resort whether villa Wi-Fi is paid: in many hotels free internet is lobby-only.
  • On boat trips, snorkelling and far sandbanks there is no signal — download everything you need offline.
  • 3 GB covers a week of photos and messengers; for video calls from the villa take 5 GB.

How much data you need

As a guide: maps, messengers and social feeds use about 500 MB a day; add video and calls and it is 1 GB or more.

eSIM for Maldives: questions

All eSIM questions →
Is there signal on the resort islands?
On most resorts — yes, 4G by the shore and in common areas. On far atolls and remote overwater villas the signal is weaker; check reviews about connectivity when choosing a hotel.
Does the eSIM work on local islands — Maafushi, Thoddoo?
Yes, inhabited islands are covered better than many resorts: locals live there, and the towers are close by.
Which networks does the Maldives eSIM use?
Plans connect to Dhiraagu. The network is selected automatically when the eSIM registers; nothing to switch by hand.
Is 5G available on Maldives plans?
Plans run on 4G, which is plenty for maps, messengers, video calls and HD streaming.
How much does a Maldives eSIM cost?
From €9.78 for a 1 GB plan. The best value per gigabyte is 20 GB for 30 days at €173.60. The price is fixed at checkout, with no fees on top.
What IP address will the Maldives eSIM have?
Traffic exits to the internet via PL, so websites see you as a visitor from there. That is normal for travel eSIMs, but keep it in mind for banking apps and geo-restricted services.
Can I share the Maldives eSIM data as a hotspot?
Yes, Wi-Fi hotspot (tethering) is allowed on every Maldives plan. Shared traffic comes out of the same allowance.
When does the validity period start?
The first time the eSIM joins a network at the destination, not at purchase. Install the profile in advance and switch it on when you land.
How do I pay?
By Mastercard issued anywhere, a Russian card, or crypto. Visa is accepted from Russian banks only. The QR code arrives by email within a couple of minutes.
